so much has changed, and so much is still changing.
the biggest change is yet to come.
each day the panic gets a little stronger,
but i just remember that moment when i realized
this
was
the
best
idea
EVER.
i'm closing my eyes and keeping my fingers crossed and waiting to see what happens
next.
i was at a little bakery this morning that sells macarons! thanks to the great macaron disaster of february 2009, i couldn't resist buying one to see what it was like.
macarons are so pretty! these even came in their own individual jewel-case-like boxes:
today was a good day! erik and joann came over, and we had breakfast and went to the zoo.
first amazing find of the day: i have been going to the same breakfast place for the past several months, but i never sat in the back room, where they have this fantastic wall mural:
apparently, 59 diner was originally phil's diner, and originally, phil's diner was supposed to involve an actual wwII war plane in the architecture! i so genuinely wish this had happened. it would have, of course, been hopelessly kitchy, but i am thrilled at the thought that my breakfast place was almost made up of actual airplane parts. the fact that i have never noticed it until now makes it feel kind of like fate.
the rest of the morning was delightful, which is to be expected of every zoo visit. red panda visit: check. okapi visit: check. springhaas visit: check. creepy four-eyed fish visit: eek. but check. second red panda visit: super check!
even though i had a really great morning, i came home around midday totally exhausted. today came close to being a three-digit temperature day, and with no rain in several weeks and none in the forecast, it was almost unbearable. it amazes me that, for a place that is supposed to be in a drought, we are still so humid! it is draining. but, it is my only day off this week, so i had to make the most of it - grocery shopping, laundry, post office. this evening i tried to make up some tuna salad for sandwiches for work this week, but after putting the eggs in the water, i completely forgot about them, and ruined them. yeah, i could have just boiled some more, but i took that as a sign that i was way too exhausted to try to be any more productive today. besides that, i've got so many projects i (want to) work on, and i've got no energy for them. there's always tomorrow.
my friend brightpop came into town yesterday to spend the afternoon with me! i see him maybe once a year, he lives up north, but comes to visit relatives. i was able to take him to see these:
we drove around and decided to have dinner - we thought we'd have sushi, but that became greek, which became vietnamese. after dinner we watched a dvd and then he had to go, with quite a ways left to drive. his visits are always so short, but i'm glad he makes the trek because i enjoy our conversations.
tonight, i'm drawing kittens and whales and wondering if i can mix paint without a pallet knife (i think i've got a plastic knife in the kitchen somewhere...) and digging through photobooks for baby pictures and running out of time, days are sometimes too short. if only i didn't need to sleep.
i just finished mixing this up in order to make up some tomato-basil pasta salad. the mixture needs a couple of hours in the fridge, and then i'll mix it up with some mini-farfalle pasta. it is a perfect cool meal for these muggy spring days. last time i made this, it was way too much for just me, so i'm playing around with portions. this is all about half of the recipe, except the tomotoes. last time it didn't have nearly enough tomatoes.
today i've been ripping cds, none of them mine. in a bit i'll leave to do laundry, then come home, take a shower, and get ready for star trek tonight. tomorrow is a crazy day - work in the morning, an opening at the gallery, and david's band playing late. then saturday is a long day at the gallery, and maybe star trek again, with a different crew. let's see if i survive until sunday. <3
i discovered a shorter walking route to my mechanics today, although it isn't necessarily a more enjoyable walk. but, along the way, i devised a value scale of how good of a walk i'm on, determined by the quantity/variety of animals i see. it went something like this:
3 or more cats = extremely good walk
1 possum = 2 cats
1 raccoon = 3 cats
1 bunny = 5 cats
1 dog getting walked = 1/2 cat (not because they aren't as good, but because they are extremely common)
1 dog just roaming around freely = eek.
1 white dog who stares at you when you go on a walk in the middle of the night = uncertain omen
1 cardinal, or otherwise colorful bird = five pigeons
1 mottled-colored pigeon = 3 regular pigeons
1 regular duck = 3 pigeons
1 loon = 3 cats (because they are wicked awesome, from their charcoal feathers to their red eyes to their blue feet, that aren't webbed, but their toes fan in the water. i like them a lot.)
1 butterfly = four pigeons
1 nutria = WIN.
today was a 2 cat walk. one was black and one was orange.
